2016_07_18_83252-1150066013.jpeg

The terms “sickle cell crisis” or “sickling crisis” may be used to describe several independent acute conditions occurring in patients with SCD (Sickle cell disease).

SCD results in anaemia and crises that could be of many types including the vaso-occlusive crisis, aplastic crisis, sequestration crisis, haemolytic crisis and others.

Most episodes of sickle cell crises last between five and seven days. “Although infection, dehydration, and acidosis (all of which favor sickling) can act as triggers, in most instances, no predisposing cause is identified.”

Vaso-occlusive crisis

The vaso-occlusive crisis is caused by sickle-shaped red blood cells that obstruct capillaries and restrict blood flow to an organ resulting in ischaemia, pain, necrosis, and often organ damage.

The frequency, severity, and duration of these crises vary considerably. Painful crises are treated with hydration, analgesics, and blood transfusion; pain management requires opioid  administration at regular intervals until the crisis has settled.

Others include, splenic sequestring crisis,  acute chest syndrome among others.

How to prevent crisis in individuals with sickle cell.
Firstly due to the fact that the majority reason of crisis in a SC patient  is the blockage of the blood vessels causing poor circulation and vasoclusive crisis in the part of the body short of circulation. Hydration is the first approach of crisis prevention.

1) Water therapy /hydration

Every individual living with SC is advised to take at least 3-4ltrs of fluids/water a day to help their circulation  and prevent crisis.

2) Mental and emotional balance

Our psychological state is very paramount and important in prevention of crisis in sickle cell patient, due to the fact that most SC patient face stigmatization, rejection and also depression, their pyschological state most time drive them to crisis.

It is advised that they should prevent any thing that could cause the above listed and it more from their care givers ,friends and family, they should be loved and assured that SC is not the end of life.

3) Daily drugs

Another important way to prevent crisis is to make sure their(SC patients) take their drugs daily such folic acid, B- complex, Paludrine and any other specially prescribed drugs, please make sure you use them daily as prescribed. Some patients are place on hydroxyurea.

4) Prevention of  Malaria

Malaria on it itself causes a lot of deaths yearly so everyone should prevent malaria.  In the case of sickle cell patient, a mosquito bite can send a patient to crisis within days and also have malaria, it is advised to take malaria prophylaxis drugs such as Paludrine which prevents malaria.

Also the use of mosquito repellents ,nets and also ensuring a clean hygiene of the environment to prevent a breeding ground for mosquitoes is very effective.

5) Controlled Lifestyle

It very good to study yourself and know and understand what triggers your crisis, like high and low weather, very hot and very cold days, too much exercise, stress etc all this are bad for a sickle cell patient, so it advised to learn and understand what makes you go into crisis.

6) Diet

Eat consciously, eat balanced diet, include fruits and vegetables in your meals.

This are the major ways of preventing sickle cell  crisis, with this you are assured of not having to visit the hospital anytime soon.
Remember you’re a survivor and a warrior and  never let anything bring you down.

Continue to sickle strong and live a healthy life, happy world sickle cell day.

Phone addiction and Mental Health

For most young people their mobile phones are like an extension of their body, it can also be likened to a vital organ such as the heart.  Recent studies among young people have shown that young people show signs of anxiety and even express a sense of loss if kept away from their phones for even an hour. Many young people  would rather  starve themselves than not have internet subscriptions on their phones, and like the slogan of a popular internet provider says “DATA IS LIFE” , data plans are like oxygen giving young people access to the internet and most importantly social media.

Phones are very practical tools in today’s world but they can also be tools of destruction and make us unproductive  if used wrongly. What do phones not do these days? you can go cashless and still make purchases not with the swipe of your card but with a few simple clicks on your mobile device, you can keep in touch with family and friends irrespective of where they are in the world. Our phones have globalized us more than personal computers or desktops ever will, but nothing comes without a price, our phones can also turn to absolute distractions when not used constructively. This little but sophisticated devices have opened a window to a whole new world of entertainment, monitoring the lives of others, unfair comparison etc.

Social media especially has been a core culprit in phone addiction, and social media while it is good for marketing and meeting people has its vices. It portrays the lives of individuals the way they choose to tell their story not the exact reality of their lives or the price they had to pay to live rich, glamorous or successful lives. Young people see celebrities with expensive cars, clothes , houses and holiday trips and they are depressed because they wonder if they will ever be able to meet up to that standard of living hence you hear phases like ‘School is SCAM’ meaning education  cannot bring them the wealth they desire. Young people no longer see the need for an education, following due process in life and being consistently hardworking and i don’t blame them, the lifestyle young celebrities portray on various social media platforms makes it difficult for young people to see the relevance of a good education and working your way up from the bottom to the top. Needless to say that depression is not far from the door, when you compare the net worth of the average educated young person  to the average online or social media celebrity. This has lead many young people into illegal activities as they try to meet up with the unrealistic standards they see online

Another hazard that mobile phones have bestowed upon us is the ability to observe the lives of others via social media platforms and sometimes make unfair comparisons of ourselves and what we see on the screen of our phones. Whatsapp status, instagram, snapchat etc have become a yard stick for what is trending and what is socially acceptable among young people. This can significantly affect the mental health of young people not suddenly but gradually as they accept social media as the only reality of life and not entertainment . 99% of the content on social media are thought through and staged to appeal to whatever audience an influencer or celebrity is trying to reach. Delusion of grandeur is easier to achieve on this platforms, For those who have no means of meeting up to presumed standards or achievement of their peers and celebrities there is bound to be anxiety, depression, anger, frustration, hopelessness and worst of all suicidal ideation. The mental health of this generation is at stake and the abuse of technology is to blame.

II) Protect your head, head injuries can lead to permanent brain damage and consistently having seizures. Wear helmets when riding a bike or playing a dangerous sports.
III) Learn a new skill once in a while, even a seemingly mundane skill such as basket weaving can do a lot for your mental capacity.
Iv) Exercise regularly, this helps to relax your body hence you are able to think better.
V) Play strategy games e.g board games such as chess, scramble draft etc.
